IDC: Android Amasses 75% Market Share In Q3 2012, iOS Barely Breaking Double Digits

Market research firm IDC, has released market share figures for Q3 2012 and boy does it look good for Android. Continuing to dominate smartphone market share, Android accounted for 75% of the 181.1 million smartphones shipped in Q3 2012. Those numbers are absolutely insane, and to put things into perspective, if you round up all smartphones ever shipped in the year 2007, it still wouldn’t be as many as Android has shipped in Q3 2012 alone!

So, who’s second? Come on, you know the answer to that one — iOS! Coming in a distant… distant… distant second, iOS managed to produce the only other double digit market share percentage with 14.9%. Everyone else, well… they exist, somewhere out there. I’ve heard stories of rare, endangered BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 devices, but I’m pretty sure the next time I actually see one will be in a museum.

Yea, I know, market share means nothing — blah… blah… blah… Well guess what? More market share means more consumers, and more consumers means more opportunity for monetization. Monetization for developers, accessory makers, smartphone manufacturers, etc. It’s this growth in market share that will lead to growth in the Android ecosystem.

It’s great news for you and I (assuming your you’re an Android user). This means more apps, games, devices, cool accessories, and more. It’s an absolutely fantastic time to be an Android user and I couldn’t be more excited.
